The Craftsman-Prairie style home is one of our favorite forms. The Church Street house, built in 1918, was owned by the same family until it came to us. This particular house caught our eye for a number of reasons: its generous porch with thick granite columns, its oversized windows with the original wavy glass and a house length long hallway running horizontally down the center of the place. The large sun filled bedrooms had tall doors with transoms all leading into this wide hallway beautifully tiled in a playful curvy blue and white encaustic tile we travelled through three states collecting. We tweaked and rearranged a bit but were careful to not mess with the original patina of the house. The kitchen was one of the biggest challenges, being primarily comprised of doors and windows. Originally blessed with a big pantry, we created more storage and more countertop space with an ample island. The primary bedroom was literally drenched in sunlight every morning. Its ensuite bath was an amusing two part room with twin bookshelf type vanities and a huge egg shaped free standing soaking tub. The house truly lived large and we so enjoyed our eighteen month stay living and creating there.
